Designed as a multimedia package, the game includes a murder mystery which supports Scottish pupils studying French of German between S1 and S4. It also has and eight-minute video highlighting the benefits of studying languages and provides information about courses in the Scottish curriculum. Councillor Carol Bartholomew, convener of the Children’s Services and Lifelong Learning Committee, said: “Once again West Lothian is leading the way with innovative approaches to learning, and it is great this resource will be available to benefit young people throughout Scotland.” West Lothian Council education officer Med Morrison, who helped to develop Red Herring, added: “The game involves interacting with different animated characters which will help improve listening and comprehension skills, whilst the problem-solving activities within the murder investigation will reinforce and extend vocabulary.” Red Herring has already been piloted in West Lothian and schools in other regions over the past few months and some teachers have claimed that the game as “increased concentration and motivation” amongst pupils. The CD-Rom is expected to be sent to secondary schools across the country before the next school year begins. |
